The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Youth Orchestra (ECSYO) and String Ensemble are education programs of the ECSO that provide young musicians from around the region the opportunity to perform challenging, high quality compositions in a variety of styles. First conceived and developed by Harriet Friedstein and Victor Norman in 1966, it strives to inspire its young musicians to reach beyond the musical experiences offered in school programs. The musicians are encouraged to learn not just the notes of the score, but also about the composers, history, and meaning behind the music.
The ECSYO is a special program. We are striving to inspire our students to reach beyond the musical experiences offered in school programs, to expose them to the possibilities in the world of musical arts. Throughout the year, we offer multiple opportunities to interact with the professionals from the ECSO. Perhaps some of our students will continue pursuing music in college, or in careers involving musical performance. But even if they do not, we all know that music builds strong minds in the areas of mathematics, logic, and memory. It is our sincere hope that through their involvement with ECSYO, our students will gain a strong work ethic and a deep love of music.

The two ensembles – ECSYO and String Ensemble – offer a unique musical experience to young musicians in grades 4 to 12 of different skill levels.
Our Youth Orchestra brings musicians from local school orchestra and band programs together into a traditional orchestra format. Typically students are in grades 8-12, and have played their instrument for 3-5 years. We also offer a Strings Ensemble group for grades 4-8.
Musicians in each ensemble have the opportunity to perform at least two concerts each season, share the stage with ECSO musicians, and receive behind the scenes experiences. Due to Covid-19, we have currently suspended rehearsals. Sign up for updates below to learn more about becoming a member, our performance schedule, events and volunteer opportunities.
