About the ECSYO

The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Youth Orchestra (ECSYO) and String Ensemble are education programs of the ECSO that provide young musicians from around the region the opportunity to perform challenging, high quality compositions in a variety of styles. First conceived and developed by Harriet Friedstein and Victor Norman in 1966, this program encourages young musicians are encouraged to learn not just the notes of the score, but also about the composers, history, and meaning behind the music.

The ECSYO is a special program. We are striving to inspire our students to reach beyond the musical experiences offered in school programs, to expose them to the possibilities in the world of musical arts. Throughout the year, we offer multiple opportunities to interact with the professional musicians from the ECSO. Perhaps some of our students will continue pursuing music in college, or in careers involving musical performance. But even if they do not, we all know that music builds strong minds in the areas of mathematics, logic, and memory. It is our sincere hope that through their involvement with ECSYO, our students will gain a strong work ethic and a deep love of music.
