Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra appoints three new board members

Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra announces that following its annual meeting the organization has appointed three new board members. The new board members are Jonathan Nickerson, Paul Sweeney, and Maura Harrington, and they represent a broad range of geographic affiliation and talents.

Caleb Bailey, Executive Director of the ECSO commented, “We are fortunate to have these board members’ skills and personalities joining our organization. This is a very exciting time in our history, and the energy that they all bring to the table will help us move forward with bringing live orchestral music to the community.”

Jonathan Nickerson is a 1984 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy and holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He served 23 years as a commissioned officer in the United States Coast Guard and later retired and joined AIM Consulting Associates in 2007 providing leadership and management services for 13 years to government agencies, international partners, universities and colleges, and fortune 500 companies. During his years of retirement, Jon has volunteered services to numerous local organizations. He served three years on the Board of Directors for the Stonington Community Center (COMO) and was the Board President from 2015 to 2017. Jon chaired master planning and exhibition design committees for the future National Coast Guard Museum, and he facilitated planning efforts at the Mystic Museum of Art and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. Jon is an active outdoorsman, artist, and museum enthusiast. Jon and his wife, Christine, reside in Pawcatuck. They enjoy travel and live musical performances. They also treasure time with their two adult children, Michael and Laura, and a recent newborn granddaughter, Ellie Nickerson.

Paul Sweeney is a Professional Engineer (PE) and is the owner/principal of Riverside Engineering LLC, a consulting engineering business offering expert witness and crane and rigging services since 2015. In the past, he has worked for the Veteran’s Administration in Washington D.C. and General Dynamics Electric Boat for 31 years. Paul currently is an Adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of New Haven and was an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. Maura K. Harrington was the Executive VP Insurance Underwriter at Prudential Insurance and attended Providence College. She is a mother of two grown children and focuses on philanthropy and volunteer opportunities that serve the needs of the elderly, underserved and homeless by incorporating music and dance with her involvement. Maura believes these important social causes need the assistance of those who know the great fortune of an abundant life; and that the same is true for the arts. She has volunteered at the Massachusetts General Hospital, St. Celia Parish in Boston, Parent Association Beaver Country Day School, and A Faith That Does Justice where she is also the lead sponsor. She sponsors numerous other organizations such as Boston Center for the Arts, National Ballet of Canada, Womens Lunch Place, Mass College of Art, Ogunquit Playhouse Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Good Shepherd Food Bank, and the Eastern CT Symphony Orchestra.

Board President Liane Crawford had the following statement “I am delighted to welcome Jon Nickerson, Maura Harrington and Paul Sweeney to our ECSO Board of Directors. Now celebrating our 77th year, we continue to present high caliber live orchestral music for the greater New London and Eastern CT communities. Recent concerts in Norwich, Willimantic, and Stonington reflect our renewed dedication to serving a broader area.

Our mission is to inspire, educate, and connect our communities through live orchestral music.

Come out and catch a ferry to Block Island on August 16th to see ECSO perform at 6:00.

To close out the summer season, we are partnering with the Block Island Chamber of Commerce for a beautiful evening concert at Champlin’s Hotel and Marina Resort situated on Block Island’s beautiful Great Salt Pond. The natural beauty, historical charm, and laid-back vibe you can only find on Block Island will make it the best summer day in our book, spent overlooking New Harbor, soaking in the serene atmosphere of the Island, and listening to the sweet sounds of our chamber orchestra.

Concertmaster, Stephan Tieszen, will lead a solo performance of Mozart’s 5th Voilin Concerto and  Music Director & Conductor, Toshiyuki Shimada led musicians in Chevalier de Saint George 1st Symphony and Elgar Serenade. It was a pleasure to play once again on Block Island.

We hope to see faces both from the mainland and those of island residents. The money raised from their support is going towards supporting music education efforts. The ECSO is so grateful to be a part of such an amazing event and even more to contribute to the cause of advancing musical interests all over New England.  Stay tuned for more events to come in the fall, and stay tuned for our program book that will be linked below to learn more about Summer Symphony at Champlin’s Marina.

The ECSO held its annual meeting on Tuesday, July 12th, at the Thames Club to celebrate a successful 2022-23 season and year. Thank you for being part of our musical family and this community that supports our orchestra. We heard moving and inspiring remarks from the Mayor of New London, Michael Passero as well as our Board President, Liane Crawford, and closing words from our beloved Music Director and Conductor, Toshiyuki Shimada.

One of the most uplifting aspects of our meeting each year is to incorporate music, and it was such a treat to hear ECSO Concertmaster Stephan Tieszen perform everything from Gershwin’s Summertime to Saint-Saëns’ The Swan from Carnival of the Animals.

MENDELSSOHN & DEBUSSY– Saturday, April 22, 2023, 7:30 pm

Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London, CT 06320

In celebration of Earth Day, the concert will open with Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage by Felix Mendelssohn, a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn’s “Calm Sea” lacks the eerie “dead silence” and instead takes a more inclusive view, placing us in the scene by ambiguously interweaving objective imagery with emotional responses –the vague anxiety in the groping lines and the fervent prayer in the urgent but hesitant lyricism. Shirley Kim, ECSO’s 2022 Instrumental Competition winner will then perform Schelomo: Rhapsodie Hébraïque, composed by Ernest Bloch. According to Bloch’s description, the solo cello in Schelomo is the personification of King Solomon, and the orchestra represents the world around him, and his life.

After the intermission, Voices Shouting Out, composed by Nkeiru Okoye, who specializes in composing in a variety of musical styles, will be performed; this piece is considered her response to the 9/11 tragedy, reflecting the determination of a people to move forward in faith and unity. ECSO will also perform Jeder Baum spricht (Every Tree Speaks) by Iman Habibi, an Iranian-Canadian composer and pianist. Inspired by Beethoven’s ideas about nature, Iman Habibi composed Jeder Baum spricht, which aims to explore climate change.

Finally, ECSO’s season will conclude with La mer by French composer Claude Debussy, whose work depict the sea perfectly, expressing its ever-changing shapes, shimmering surfaces and mysterious depths. Although some call La mer a symphony, it may be more accurately described as an anti-symphony, as it deliberately eschews traditional symphonic forms. Instead, it erodes those traditions by revealing alternatives, just as the waves have reshaped even the most rugged shores.

Shirley Kim, Cello for Bloch:

Shirley Kim is currently pursuing her master’s degree in orchestral performance at the Manhattan School of Music with Alan Stepansky. Prior to studying at the Manhattan School of Music, Shirley completed her undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music with Steven Doane and Rosemary Elliot. At Eastman, Shirley served as principal cellist of the Philharmonia and was part of the honors quartet. An avid chamber musician, she was selected as the recipient of the 2021 Celentano chamber award for excellence in chamber music at Eastman.

Her other notable chamber prizes include 2nd prize at the MTNA chamber competition and 1st prize at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music Chamber Competition in 2017. Shirley is a Los Angeles native and she began the cello at age four with Nancy Yamagata at the Colburn School and studied with Dr. Richard Naill in her highschool years. She served as principal cellist of the Colburn Youth orchestra in 2017 and in 2016, she was the prizewinner of their 2016 concerto competition in which she performed Lalo’s Cello Concerto at the LACMA’s Bing Theater.

Shirley has performed in venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Zipper Hall, and the Morgan Library Museum. During the summers Shirley has attended Music Academy of the West, Sarasota Festival Orchestra, Heifetz International Music Festival, Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, Bowdoin International Festival, and Orford Musique. Shirley enjoys hiking and cooking in her free time.

BRITTEN & BRAHMS– Saturday, March 18, 2023, 7:30 pm

The ECSO welcomes the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus to the Garde Arts Center stage in March, when the expanded forces present one of the greatest works of Johannes Brahms: A German Requiem, to words derived from the German Luther Bible. Sacred but not liturgical, the seven-movement Ein deutsches Requiem was composed between 1865 and 1868 for orchestra, chorus, soprano, and baritone. Its mood of grief is said to reflect the sadness Brahms felt at the loss of his mother, Johanna, in 1865. The vocal soloists are Sarah Joyce Cooper, soprano, and Eliam Ramos, bass baritone.

Also on the program is Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings written in 1943 at the request of Dennis Brain, then principal horn of the Royal Air Force Orchestra, who premiere the piece with Britten’s life partner Peter Pears (tenor). The ECSO and the U.S. Coast Guard Band principal horn Matthew Muehl-Miller, a graduate of Juilliard and Rice, is the horn soloist and he will be joined by tenor Gene Stenger. Six of the eight movements (the first and last are horn solos) are set to texts by English poets: Charles Cotton; Alfred, Lord Tennyson; William Blake; an anonymous 15th-century poet; Ben Johnson; and John Keats.

Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London, CT 06320

The concert opens with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 32, composed in 1779. The symphony begins with repeated strong chords throughout the orchestra, stating a “playful” theme, followed by an opening figure, and concludes the work with a bombastic style. Afterwards, Gary Sienkiewicz (ECSO principal tuba) will perform the Tuba Concerto by British composer Vaughan Williams, a concerto that is now one of Vaughan Williams’ most popular works, showcasing the more sonic and lyrical qualities of the tuba. Following the intermission perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 will be brought to life by pianist Vyacheslav Gryaznov. The concerto was premiered in New York City on November 28, 1909 and is often cited as one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical piano repertoire, displaying a grander, fuller, broader tone and style than its predecessor.

There will be a complimentary post-concert reception sponsored by ECSO Board members Naomi & Ivan Otterness, Tom & Dorrit Castle, and Bob and Mary Reed.

This concert is generously sponsored by Lawrence + Memorial Hospital / Yale New Haven Health.
