NEW LONDON BIG BAND RETURNS

Saturday, January 21, 2023
7:30 PM
Garde Arts Center, New London

For the first concert of the year 2023, the ECSO will revisit a collaboration that delighted audiences in February of 2020 – bringing back the New London Big Band. The 17-piece ensemble, led by trombonist Sean Nelson, will share the Garde Arts Center stage, performing works by American composers including George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, John Harbison, and many more.

From the pen of the Brooklyn-born Gershwin comes the gorgeously wistful The Man I Love, arranged by Tom Myron, who composed Bell Harbor, a special 75th anniversary commission for the ECSO.

A dozen years before West Side Story, Bernstein had a winner on Broadway with On the Town. The combined ensemble will play Three Dance Episodes from that sailors-on-shore-leave show, inspired by the Jerome Robbins ballet Fancy Free. The ECSO will also perform MIT professor John Harbison’s Remembering Gatsby (Foxtrot for Orchestra), which was written in 1985 for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
