Matt is currently Assistant Principal Horn with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, a group he first joined in 1974. He has also performed with many local ensembles including the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, Meriden Symphony Orchestra, Wallingford Symphony Orchestra, and Waterbury Symphony Orchestra.
In 1975, Matt earned a Bachelor degree in Music Education from the University of Rhode Island. He began his French horn studies with Russell LeBer and Katheryn Hunt, both members of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, and continued with Thomas Newell of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
For many years Matt has demonstrated to audiences from elementary school through senior citizen the fundamentals of brass instruments by “building” a functional horn using rubber hoses and funnels and performing on it. In 2019 he included pre-school children in a highly participatory version of the demonstration where students get to experience producing sounds the way brass instrumentalists do, feel the vibrations in their hands, and experience ensemble performance by forming their own in-class marching band.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Matt is a photographer, a hobby he has had since college. In 2007 he fulfilled the boyhood dream of earning a private pilot’s license.
