Mozart

Divertimento No. 1

Violin Concerto No. 4

Symphony No. 29

All the pieces in this program were composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) in Salzburg between the age of 16 to 19.

Mozart’s father Leopold (1719-1787), was himself an excellent violinist and Wolfgang began lessons with his father when he was nine. He entered into the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg in 1769 as both concertmaster and composer, and during this period, Mozart the violinist did indeed compose several works for strings, including divertimenti and serenades and all of his five violin concertos.

All three pieces are excellent examples of splendid and stately writing: charming, polite, and faithful to the Viennese classical model. The works all have light-hearted charm and elegance that are meant to entertain and delight the audiences.
